The plumber Karl Höpken (1890-1966) served as a non-commissioned officer in the searchlight platoon of the Schleswig-Holstein Pioneer Battalion No. 9. The battalion was recruited mainly in the Prussian province of Schleswig-Holstein and belonged to the 17th Infantry Division, which was exclusively based at the Western Front in Belgium and France was used.
