Johann Brauns, born October 28, 1898 in Stockum, comes from a small village called Hinterhausen in the Eifel. His parents later moved to the Ruhr area and operated a coal trade there. After the accidental death of his twin brother (he was 8 years old), his parents moved back to the Eifel. There he learned the trade of blacksmith in his father's forge.
