Prayer of Emperor Charles
Gilbert Vitse was born in 1898 in Roesbrugge and died in Poperinge in 1972. He enlisted as a volunteer in the Belgian army at the end of 1914, when he was 16 years old. When he left for the army, his parents gave him a handwritten prayer as a talisman, called 'Prayer of Emperor Karel'.
