Ivan Furst was born in Donji Miholjec, where he worked as a barber. At the beginning of World War I in 1914, he was mobilized into the Austro-Hungarian army and assigned to the 28th People's-Ustasha Regiment, where he was given the rank of assistant commander of the regiment.
